The Light Comprehends the Darkness
Alan Hammond: In human consciousness, light is a fairly universal symbol of God, of vision, and of understanding. Perhaps the most recognizable symbol of the glory of God is our Sun. The Sun is glorious to behold. It provides warmth, and is the foundation for all life on our planet. It's easy to understand the value of this symbol. However, there is more to see.
We can see dots of light, suns, in the vastness of the cosmos, but we're told that ninety-five percent of space contains invisible dark matter and energy. Considering this dark matter and energy, can be a way of exploring some invisible yet powerful elements of the life process. Besides whatever dark matter and energy there may be, space is also full of radiation from the physical heavenly bodies we can see-but we can only see the physical level of form. We must realize the limits of our human perception, and the "darkness of space," as we call it, may be glorious light to other forms of consciousness.
On Earth, human beings think they live in the light of their own consciousness-after all, much of the time they are awake. They also think they have the light of understanding about many things. But the Truth is, human consciousness as it now is, is living in the depths of ignorance. Currently they think that light is knowledge about the physical outer world, but full knowing is not limited to that area. True knowing is inherent in the radiation from the undimensional levels of True Identity.
Answers are never found by studying just the physical factors. We won't take time now, but it is easy to demonstrate that physical factors are governed by metaphysical, invisible factors. And invariably, people who are centered in the physical or mental levels of their Being, do not have sufficient fine substance to understand the level providing the origins and the control of things.
We could say that human beings live in a twilight zone-full of monsters and frightening happenings. Yet even in this dark and twilight state, human beings sense the ideal-we might call it heaven-because the ideal, heaven, is always vibrationally present and can be sensed. But because of inadequate spiritual substance, human beings invariably experience disturbed translations of sensings and distorted manifestations of the expression of the life current. This constitutes the twilight zone.
I'd like to read a couple of verses from the Gospel of John:
"In him [Jesus] was life; and the life was the light of men.
"And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not."
The darkened human consciousness does not understand the light that is present both within and without, and certainly does not recognize the supreme intelligence that is present in spiritual expression. Invariably in human consciousness light is considered good, and dark considered evil or wicked. We should seek to modify this paradigm. Darkness is part of the creative process. Let me read a little more, which says this in a different way:
"In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.
"And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.
"And God said, Let there be light: and there was light.
"And God saw the light, that it was good: and God divided the light from the darkness.
"And God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And the evening and the morning were the first day."
In those few verses it's interesting to see that what human beings now call light was at one time a new phenomenon, and appeared when an activated spectrum of vibration was made manifest: "…the evening and the morning were the first day." The darkness came before the light in this process. We know that in the creative process something happens in the dark, in the invisible levels, before creation is made manifest in what we call the light. Darkness then can be seen as a womb for the day, and the events to follow. And so it is with all creative cycles. Another interesting view of this is that our every conscious experience, moment by moment, emerges out of the darkness (to us) of the vastness of Being.
It's not traditional to think about darkness. People prefer to meditate on the light, but Being is in the darkness too. Spirit shines in physical darkness. We've all been in a dark room at night. The light of Spirit also shines in dark circumstances. We have surely experienced this many times.
Darkness is not just an unconscious state. Intelligence is there. Intelligence can be seen to be in many dark places. As we've already mentioned, the womb, for example. The interior of the body is another simple, close illustration. There is much intelligence ceaselessly at work there in the dark.
The dark is not what it seems to be to the fallen human mind. As I mentioned before, does not each moment of experience emerge out of the dark vast unconscious (to us) of the rest of Being? If we trust the Lord we may look forward to what emerges moment by moment with confidence, because we know that it will be something wonderful.
The darkness of night is an active place. Now true, many fears arise at night about many things. The fearful die a thousand deaths. But the Lord, Spirit is there too. No matter what fears are present with us, we know the nature of Being, and in such experiences we may begin to say to our outer consciousness: "Seek communion with the Spirit that is omnipresent." At night the outer world recedes and we can use this time to let Spirit bring the next day and future actions to focus. We've all done that.
Recently I saw a total eclipse of the moon where the light gradually disappeared. This is a good symbol, because sometimes fear begins to obscure the light and no matter how intense the experience may be, believe it or not, the eclipse and the presence of the fear, the darkness, are only temporary. Eclipses come when earthly factors (the Earth in a literal eclipse) block out the light. We should always remember that we share fears experienced universally by everyone. So we have a particular responsibility to commune with the Lord in the midst of this experience, to traverse this cycle of challenge.
This is spiritual and emotional work. Most people don't like to really indulge in hard spiritual and emotional work because at times it's difficult. They would much rather imagine a life where one discovers a couple of magic words that instantly dispel all challenge. Emotional and spiritual substance is of the densest, and so to know the victory in these levels requires work. One of the members of our mailing list had a wonderfully wry statement at the bottom of his emails for quite awhile. It said: The easy way is hard enough. How true that is! Our consciousness knows such emotions as fear, as does every creature on Earth. Therefore we can consciously focus service, as we deal with such factors.
We are used to meeting the Lord in the light. We must train our outer consciousnesses to meet Him in the dark.
As we look at the physical forms all around us we see they are full of beauty and wonder, and since all forms have their form of consciousness, the same beauty and wonder is true at the level of consciousness. The consciousness of the planet is vast, and has such a varied interior landscape that is all part of the one Divine Technology. Consciousness is present throughout the whole Archangelic Body of this planet. Consciousness is composed of very intense substance and therefore intense experience. It is therefore our most vital level of contributory function.
The five percent of the cosmos that we can see is pretty wonderful, is it not? Do we not think that the ninety-five percent that we cannot see is not just as wonderful? Life can and does create many forms of new consciousness. Life has an unlimited imagination and capability far, far beyond the puny, limited human consciousness. John said: "The darkness comprehended not the light," and it has been our experience that our little consciousness has not comprehended the vast light that is present in the seeming darkness of the cosmos.
Everywhere is actually full of coordinated light. Now it's important to remember this especially in our so-called dark circumstances and experiences. Our own outer consciousness can be like a frightened child in the dark. We must work with it, speak with it. Here is a core area of vibrational work in the consciousness of the whole planet. So if we are in the twilight zone or the dark in experience, how do we function? We remember who we are and say, "Let there be light,"-and there will be adequate light generated to take the next steps. We can know in our consciousness, "I know my Identity and my true nature and I express this into this very situation." In this way we're connected with the intelligence of the Whole, the whole Light of Being, and we will invariably find that our outer experience of darkness is temporary. We do not fight darkness. We stand still and gradually see the salvation of the Lord.
Dark circumstances in peoples' lives are usually called evil. We, and all human beings, bring most of the discomforts on ourselves. If we're honest we can examine our spiritual, emotional, mental, physical habits and see that we do indeed cause a lot of our own distresses. However, all things called evil are, with a long view, seen to be evol-seen to be part of an incomplete cycle, which is on the way from a distorted experience to reintegration into the heavenly state. There is only one Power, there is only one Design and any deviation is set immediately on course to return experience to the Divine state. Evil is always temporary. Every uncomfortable state may be seen as a process of evol, so we just move with it, giving expression to the Tone.
We live and serve in the midst of a human state of darkness of consciousness. "This state can begin to be dissipated by the conscious presence of who I Am," we each can say, and out of this Presence shines the Light of Life.
There is no absolute darkness where I Am, and we are here to bring awareness of the glory and the trustworthiness of Being.
